Genetica Medica: Area Ricerca

Research Projects Ongoing or Completed During the Last 3 Years:

  • 1998-2001 Italian National Council of Research "Analysis of RNAs transcribed from SMN1 for the diagnosis of spinal muscular atrophy". This project studied an original method to identify SMA heterozygous patients. As part of this project we developed a method that has been patented (MI2000A 002041 19.09.2000).
  • 2000 Italian Telethon: "Psoriasis genetics" This project has allowed the identification of a novel psoriasis susceptibility gene on chromosome 1 and established a model to study the interaction between genes in a complex disease.
  • 1999 SMA families, USA "Defining a role for SMN and NAIP as possible inhibitors of neuronal .
  • 2000-2002 Italian Ministry of Research and Technology (MURST). "Multifocal combined approaches for gene therapy of malignant gliomas". This is a multicenter project involving different groups. Our group is involved in studying the expression of VEGF gene and its receptor before and after directed in vitro mutagenesis.
  • 2001 Italian Ministry of University, Research and Technology “ Genetic basis of congenital heart diseases using a gene-expression profiling approach”.
  • 2000-2002 “Genetics of complex diseases: molecular methods, mathematical analyses, and some applications". The purpose of this project is the analysis of genes from the Epidermal Differentiation Complex (EDC), searching for psoriasis alleles. In particular we examined at expression level simultaneously 12 different genes expressed in human keratinocytes.
  • 2002-2004: “Genetics and Genomics of Atherosclerosis” Italian Ministry of University and Research.
  • 2002-2004: ”Dissecting mendelian phenotypes” Italian Ministry of University and Research (Fondi FIRB).
  • 2002-2004: “Operative network on Neuromuscular Disorders”, Italian Ministry of Health.
  • 2002-2004:” Neurogenetics of neurodegenerative Disorders” Italian Ministry of Health.
  • 2002-2004: “ Research of cystic fibrosis phenotype modifier genes” Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research.
  • 2003- 2005: “MAD and laminophaties” Italian Telethon.
  • 2005-2009: EU Grant NACBO “Novel and improved nanomaterials, chemistries and apparatus for nanobiotechnology”.
  • 2005-2007: AIRC (Italian Association for Cancer Research) “Genomics of Human Prostate Cancer”.
  • 2004-2007: Genetics of Cystic Fibrosis. Regione Lazio, Italy.
  • 2005-2008: EU Grant FP6-2004-LIFESCIHEALTH-5: Nuclear Envelope-linked Rare Human Diseases: From Molecular Pathophysiology towards Clinical
